They've been doing this (in an early-adapter, I'll make my own version) at Aureole Charlie Palmer's in Vegas for some years now. And last I heard from the sommelier, it was very successful.

As David said: be nice if they could keep it updated by linking it to their inventory and sales system. But that's probably a dream that will never happen. If they don't list wines that are out of stock (or never were in stock), a lot of restaurants would have dramatically shorter lists.

Don't know how this could be as the iPad was only introduced very recently.

What Ramon said. The iPad came out only this year. I assume you're talking about some kind of computer-screen wine-list display?

As in what I said: an "I'll make my own".

The wine director at the restaurant didn't wait around for Apple to invent something for him. He worked with some tech guys and built his own version. I don't know what platform it was, as I am not tech-savvy, but it made a huge splash at the time. I'm surprised you don't recall it, actually, as it was discussed on this forum (or, rather, one of the previous versions of this forum).

I was interested enough, after having read about this in an article, that I talked to the guy about how he put it together. He had a fully arranged wine list on a very sophisticated tablet; as I recall he had a sort of pivot table arrangement which would allow the reader to go into any depth of info desired, so the reader could look at a simple list on digital, or burrow into greater levels of complexity and information. Also that it would synch/link to the inventory system.

When I spoke to the guy (and I'm embarrassed I don't recall his name) he was very pleased with how it was working, and with how it was accepted by the customers. Keeping in mind, however, that this is the place that has the "flying wine angels" on the central skyscraper wine bar.

The outstanding Barcelona wine temple Mon Vínic has had touchscreen computer wine lists for a few years now. Dunno what platform they use (I was too focused on the wines -- go figger! -- to spend much attention on them) but they were very useful.
