WTN: '03 Sausal Zin

Graced with unseasonably cool weather right now, we took advantage and ate dinner outdoors, making a meal of broiled rack of lamb, heirloom tomato/basil/buffala mozzarella salad and garlic naan. With this red wine-friendly meal, I opened a bottle of:

2003 Sausal Zinfandel "Old Vines" (unfiltered)
color: garnet at the center, bricking at the rim
nose: red berries, a hint of butterscotch, later becoming tarry
palate: smooth, decent acidity, ripe fruit

Those of us who live in the hinterland read Dale's offhand mentions of picking up 375s of Raveneau GC for $10 at bin end sales with pangs of jealousy, so it was with interest that I stumbled upon this wine on a local retailer's shelf, discounted to $9.99. Not OTH, but definitely ready to drink, this wine proved well worth the investment.

Many years ago I had visited Sausal and tasted several of their wines. They had a non vintage called Cellar Cats Red and some reserve Zins. All of them are I agree, excellent QPRs and have gracefully aged over the years. I fear I may have finished the last of my bottles :(

Yes, but think of the high metropolitan area cost of living and all that he had to endure financially in order to access that bargain!

I like Sausal and in fact I had a bottle of Cellar Cats Red with spaghetti last weekend. It's a nice, friendly visit, too.

I could take sides in this discussion but I'm just trying to survive in tourist filled Napa. I know sympathy just oozes from both of you.
