WTN: Ojai Riesling KickOnRanch '07...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Jul 19, 2010 10:37 am

Tried this over the weekend w/ Susan:
1. OjaiVnyd Riesling KickOnRanch/SBC (13.0%) 2007: Light gold color; lovely piney/pineapply/floral/JR rather Mosel valve oil/slatey very perfumed nose; rather tart fairly floral/pineapply/JR/piney light Mosel valve oil/minerally fairly rich flavor; long tart/rich spicy/pinneapply/floral/JR some valve oil/gout de petrol finish; a really lovely Riesling that shows a lot of Mosel character. $22.00

1. What a difference a year makes. When I first got this wine and tried it; I thought it somewhat simple and it had a schreechy acidity like dragging your fingernails down a chalkboard (for those who remember what a chalkboard is); sorta on the painful side. The wine has softened somewhat and developing some lovely aromatics and gout de petrol character. I see no reason it won't go out for 10 yrs or more. Who'd have thunk that the sands North of LosAlamos could replicate the slate of the Mosel.

I see where you say this will last another decade. Any thoughts about Ojai Chardonaay in general. Say a 2000 in the bargin bin of a store recently and resisted the urge. Will be back again this weekend so just wondering on if you think its worth taking a chance on it.

Brian,
I see this Reisling going out another 10 yrs because of its high acidity. Adam's Chards did not used to be as acid,
so have a few doubts about their longevity; even though they're not of the uber-ripe style.
The last two releases, his Chards have shown a much higher acidity. Not fun to drink now; but I think
they will age better because of the acid levels.
I would guess the '00 would still be good if the storage conditions were adequate.

You are showing a lot of love to a California Riesling which makes my least favorite variation of the grape. It sounds wonderful. I suppose I need to see if it is available locally at a reasonable price.

Thanks Tom. No idea on the storage conditions but assume its good. The bargain bin at this store is usually stuff they overbought years ago and taking up space in their warehouse. Its not flushing of distributor stock. I will probably give it a go.
