WTN: Dinner with Rahsaan (Mosel, Saar, Burg)

by David M. Bueker » Mon Jul 19, 2010 7:09 am

Rahsaan zipped through the area last evening, and had enough time to stop for dinner at our local Asian BYO. It was good to catch up, as the last time Laura and I saw him he was at the far end of a very long table.

2009 A. J. Adam Drohner Hofberg Riesling Kabinett
Where Saturday night's '08 Kabinett was like a classicial spatlese, the '09 was more in the mold of classical auslese. Sweet, borderline unctuous and yet carrying a background spine of sufficient acidity, this was an enjoyable drink despite completely confounding expectations. It resembled kabinett about as much as a Hummer resembles a Ferrari. Laura was a big fan, taking extra pours through dinner, as the sweetness in the wine did work with the sweetness in her food.

2002 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spatlese
We should have opened this bottle before the Adam. Classical spatlese with a label that says spatlese has been a rare creature, but this was one of those endangered beasts. More focused, minerally and refreshing than the Adam, it lacked the power, and so was rather overwhelmed despite its charms. My food was not sweet, and this wine was the better accompaniment of the two Rieslings.

2002 Louis Jadot (Domain Gagey) Beaune 1er Cru Chouacheaux
From half bottle, this is just starting to emerge into a lovely place. The perfume was better each time I held the glass to my nose, and the overall mouthfeel was approaching, if not yet silky. I cannot comment on the terroir expression, as I have zero idea what wine from Chuacheaux should taste like, but as a Burgundy it was quite pleasurable.

Thanks for the notes and thanks for meeting up.

Yes, the Adam was big. I finished off the bottle when I got home and it had lots of big juicy fruit and also lots of big shining acid. It was just big. And almost made my teeth hurt. As I said, it was my first taste of the 09 vintage. Nothing wrong with it and plenty of fun to drink. But if I'm being picky about what to buy and what to open again, I'm not sure if that current stage was my favorite but might like to see if it calms down a bit in the future.

I really liked the racey briskness of the Zilliken at first. But then I don't know if it was too warm, too simple, or too overpowered by the Adam. Perhaps it also needs more age?

The Jadot was probably my favorite wine. Really a nice drinking window. At the moment not complex or silky, as you said, but it was approaching that and it had lovely perfume. Thanks for bringing it!

Sounds like a fun time! Fully agree re. the Adam. I found it similarly big/sweet (though very well balanced for its ripeness and fun to drink) and am glad to have more on the way.

And the world needs more Jadot in half bottles!

The Zilliken was more open and fleshed out last night, but it does need a lot more age.

thanks for update on the Zilliken.
All I have left of the Clos des Couchereaux are full bottles, will wait a bit more.
