WTN: Kim Crawford Pinot Noir 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Jul 18, 2010 6:23 pm

Marlborough
Constellation Wines Nz

Chilled before supper.

Light cherry red in the glass.

Floral, earthy, cinnamon, cherries on the nose.

Light to medium weight, smoky, tangy, prickly effervecence on the tongue, raspberry, strawberry, spicy, red licorice, refreshing, an acidic edge, drying.

Nothing worth noting on the finish.

Screwcap closure.

Not a style I am fond of.

Purchased at $19.95 (Canadian).

Thanks for the note Bruce. Now I know to give it a pass.

I've seen it plenty of times before but never really took the plunge, for reasons I can't quite explain.

I would agree with the assessment. The 2008 just does not seem to have much going on. It certainly smells and tastes like Pinot Noir but for $20 there are many more I like better such as Yealand 2008, The Crossings 2008, Clifford Bay 2009, Villa Maria Private Bin 2008, and Mud House 2008 from Central Otago. There is also Greenstone Point 2008 at $10 but I think that it is only available on the west coast.

The light effervescence sounds like a bottling problem. But other than that, can only offer that for all I love the KC whites I have never had a satisfying pinot from them. Usually very modernly monotone.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
