WTN: Muros Antigos Escolha 2009

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Jul 09, 2010 1:54 pm

DOC Vinho Verde
Anselmo Mendes

Light, bright yellow in the glass.

Rich apricots and lemon on the nose.

Light to medium bodied, mouthwatering, apricot, green apples, a hint of pear, orange, juicy, honeyed, refreshing, nicely tangy, lemon rind.

Tangy, mouthwatering, bitter citrus rind bite and lemon on the very long finish.

A great wine on a hot and humid summer evening.

Purchased at $11.95 (Canadian) and a steal at that price.

Hi Bruce,

Was that labeled by the grape variety or is it a blend? Most of the Muros Antigos wines we get around here are either Alvarinho or Loureiro and labeled as such. Whatever it is, Anselmo Mendes does a good job in VV - and that is a nice price, too.

Earlier this week when it was super hot we absolutely demolished a cold bottle of Vinho Verde. Just cheap stuff (Gazella @ $6, from Sogrape) but the spritz and low alcohol (9% ABV) was just perfect.

I assume it was a blend as there is no mention on either the front or back labels as to which grapes are involved.

I'm not sure we get that one here - I only see the single variety ones on our shelves over in the Portuguese section of Newark.
