WTN: Baumard & ESJ

by David M. Bueker » Thu Jul 08, 2010 8:35 pm

Not certain what I wanted to drink tonight, so I got out two wines (and threw both in the fridge in deference to the heat).

1996 Domaine des Baumard Savennieres Clos de Papillon
Not premoxed! This is distinctively Chenin - wet wool, stones, waxy and nothing, I repeat, nothing that seems like it came from a grape! Good stuff.

2008 Edmunds St. John Gamay Noir 'Porphyry'
Slightly spirtzy, grapey, chalky on the finish, and deliciously refreshing when served slightly chilled on a hot summer night.

Nice note. And even nicer that it wasn't premoxed. Don Rice and I have been talking about opening a few 96 chenins to see what happens. I hope they turn out as good as this one.

Baumard's Clos de Papillon is one of the most reliable sweet Loire wines. Their Quarts de Chaumes is, year in and year out, monumental. I remember the 1996 as being particularly fine, when it was young, and being so full of potential.

The Baumard is decidedly dry - dry as dust - a wine that is dying of thirst!

I'm assuming Paul was thinking of the Paon Coteaux du Layon, I've mixed up Paon and Papillon myself.

No reduction on the 08 Porphyry?

Speaking of which, John's ESJ notes are out in his latest View From the Cellar.

A touch of reduction, but nothing like the bottle we had in NY.

Just out of curiosity, were there any corked bottles at that event?
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Sadly, 2005 Rocks and Gravel. I also personally had some suspicions of the 03 W-F, where I thought I got a little whiff, then couldn't find, but it seemed muted. Others disagreed.

Only the 08 Porphyry seemed really reductive to me, though John felt a couple of others were (I've decided I'm not especially sensitive to reduction)
