WTN: Konstantin Frank 2009 Finger Lakes Riesling

by Paul Winalski » Wed Jul 07, 2010 11:41 pm

This is an off-dry Kabinett to low Spaetlese-level semi-sweet riesling. Had I tasted it blind, I'd have guessed it was from somewhere on the Rhine. It captures the classic German riesling style perfectly. Visually it is a very pale yellow. The aroma is very fragrant and complex, with violets, honeysuckle, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, and lilac evident. The flavors are rich, classic off-dry young riesling squarely in the Germanic Kabinett/Spatelese style, with a bit of spritz. There's lemon, orange, mango, and other flavors there, sweetness, and perfect balancing acidity that carries into a long finish. This is a classic riesling--in contrast to the overripe and hence rather vapid stuff you tend to get from the US west coast (even Washington State).

Double Curly Larry. Potentially a Triple Curly with some more age to it. I'm very impressed!

2009 was a strange growing year - the summer was damp and cool, but from mid-September to late October it was dry with lots of sun. I'll have to get some of this.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.
