WTN: A Couple of Wines at Marea NYC

by Diane (Long Island) » Thu Jul 01, 2010 5:35 pm

Three of us met at Marea, which describes its food as coastal Italian seafood. It was their first time and my third time there, and I suggested we put together a crudo and pasta tasting menu. It was fantastic.

To drink with the assorted crudo, I chose a 2001 DeFaix Chablis Les Lys. This was a producer with whom I was unfamiliar. It was explained that the wine sees no oak, but I detected a hint of vanilla that puzzled me. Other than that, it was austere with a core of minerality, good from beginning to end and a nice counterpoint to the fatty fish.

With our 3 pasta dishes of spaghetti, crab, and sea urchin; fusilli with red wine braised octopus and bone marrow; and agnolotti with veal, mushrooms and sweet breads we drank a 2004 Cortese Barbaresco Rabaja. This showed beautiful aromas of fresh flowers and raspberries. The palate started out very open and juicy with berries and florals, but started to close up after it sat in the decanter for about a half hour. It surprised me as to how delicious it was right out of the bottle, into the decanter, into the glass.

My two dining companions desired more wine, and so they ordered a 2005 Aglianico to accompany a cheese plate. I still had some Cortese in my glass and was happy with that, so no Aglianico for me, and so I don't even know the producer.

Marea is part of the restaurant empire that includes, a couple of my favorites, Convivio and Alto. When it first opened a year or so ago, I thought it was a crazy time to open such a high end restaurant. They knew what they were doing - the place was packed last night

Thanks for notes, Diane. I've been wanting to try Marea, this has convinced me time to start saving my money to go (I really enjoyed Convivio, haven't been to Alto)

Thanks for the report. Like Dale I've only been to Convivio. In fact I just got back from a wonderful meal there. The prawn main course is a must try.

Re restaurant business - Convivio was packed tonight and Daniel was packed on Wednesday night. Seems to bode well for the economy.

Sure, if you're a believer in trickle down economics!

But of course we do need restaurants, they employ people and provide us with lovely dinners. And of course we need wine shops. Was happy to see customers coming in and out of Chambers this week. Although I have no idea how much they are spending..

Otherwise, sounds like a nice meal and a versatile pairing for the Barbaresco. Bravo.

Dale - it's worth the splurge, but I find that their entrees pale in comparison to the pastas, so this time, I suggested forgoing an entree. We put together our own customized crudo and pasta tasting menu, with the pastas served in 3 courses. This was the second time I had the fusilli with octopus, and this dish just blows me away.

My dinner at Alto last month has put it at the top of these 3 restaurants as far as my experience goes. A dinner to celebrate my birthday, where I brought a lovely wine that they handled as if it were one of the incredible wines from their list, and the rest of the service and amazing food, made for a very memorable evening.

I would happily return to any one of the three restaurants.

Jay - you were at Alto (upstairs in their private room) a little over a year ago - we were a table of Clos Vougeot. I thought the food was good that night, but my dinner last month far exceded it.

Coincidentally, I had dinner reservations at Convivio last night, but ended up cancelling. Hopefully, I'll get there next week and I'll look for that prawn dish.
