WTN: Loving Drouhin

by Saina » Thu Jun 24, 2010 2:33 pm

After an impossibly hectic two week "vacation" drawing to a close (where I've worked far more than usual  ), I met up with my colleague to share a bottle of wine, dinner, Orval and some Cuban cigars.

Too tired to cook, we just ordered Indian take away and opened a Joseph Drouhin Côte de Nuits-Villages 2007. Obviously, not the best match. But I did realize, again, how much I love Drouhin. Almost everything I taste from them is elegant, terroir-driven and just great fun to drink. This cheap wine (by Finnish standards in Burgundy) wine was no exception.

18,95€; 13% abv. Lovely, light colour. It smells of bright red fruit and elegantly sexy Pinosity. The brightness promises some attractive crunch on the palate, and the promise is kept: lovely crispness and lovely purity of fruit, attractively firm tannins without overpowering the fruit. Very moreish. Joyful wine. And wonderful for being under 20€.

The Orvals were delightfully Bretty and the Partagas 8-9-8 and Bolivar Gran Corona were strong, complex and herbaceous. But quite a bit of alcohol and a cigar make me afraid of tomorrow morning.
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

Never had the Drouhin Cotes de Nuits Villages, but I do like their Chorey-les-Beaune and Village Chambolle Musigny quite a lot.

A representative from them comes to annual wine fair here, and they usually have a wide range to taste from the basics up to some GCs. I find their red village wines generally very good and still relatively keenly priced. Sadly this CdN-V is the only one available in Alko. From last year, I do remember the Chambolle as a highlight.

Don't really have anything to add but I couldn't let a thread like this pass by without agreement.

Jay (who owns more Drouhin wines than any other single producer).

Nothing like Drouhin in title to flush Jay out!
I'm also a fan, and agree that Chorey and Chambolle are strongpoints in portfolio at respective price points.
Don't remember ever having a CdNV from Drouhin, sounds nice

Drouhin is also one of my favorite producers (and one that still produces Burgundy at prices I can mostly afford.. well.. they do have their stratospheric prices for some bottlings, but you know what I mean).
Cheers, Jim

Like others, I am very drawn to many of the Drouhin wines. Good break because many of those find their way to Israel and that does make life a bit easier.
