Rex Goliath wines are big, full-throttle cheapies that suit certain palates. For the same money or a dollar or two more, there are cheapies with more refinement and elegance. If I couldn't pay more than $10 for a bottle of wine, they wouldn't be my choice. Never had a Red Rock. Alamos is, I believe, an Argentine brand. If I'm right, then they make the worst pinot noir (Drano might taste better) I've ever paid real money for and I wouldn't have a thing to do with any wine in their line.

Abe, you should be able to find the entry level Cono Sur pinot for under $10, and it does very well with basic pinot flavors. I have been buying it locally for about $7.99. And, if you find their sauvignon blanc that too is true to the grape. I am not saying you can't find better for a few dollars more, but in the price range, I like them. And then there is the Castle Rock pinots. (They make about a dozen from a lot of places, even Oregon. The CR will run about $12 -13 though.

We haven't had the Alamos Pinot experience that Jenise had, but have had their Malbec on a number of occasions. It is OK, but not even the best available even at that price point.

Alamos is not worth the paper it's printed on.

The Red Rock and the Alamos are now under the Gallo umbrella. Just recently we were selling the Alamos wines for $6.99. The Red Rock seems to leave a little RS which some people might like. They also now have a red wine called Apothic Red that is going after the Menage a Trois red, also with more than 1%RS I would guess. For some reason Parker was wowwed by this. I certainly agree with the comments on the Cono Sur wines.

Gallo imports Alamos from Argentina and then distributes it? Strange.

Gallo seems to be getting involved in more imports here recently. The also have had the San Alejandro and Martin Codax wines as well as numerous others.
