WTN: Two nice Loires - Closel and Coulaine

by Matt Richman » Mon Jun 21, 2010 11:25 am

  • 2007 Domaine du Closel-Chateau des Vaults Savennières La Jalousie - France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
Wide, yeasty, broad. A very nice, easy drinking Chinon with typical honeysuckle, wax, and lemon acid. Some herbal notes. Not the most complex Savinneres, probably more of an early drinker, but very enjoyable.

  • 2008 Château de Coulaine Chinon Clos de Turpenay - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
Really nice bright acidic deep purple fruit, black burnt wood core, peppers, green brambly herb. Long energetic finish. Beautiful perfume. Fine tannins. A nice package all together with good punch and energy. With a few years in bottle it will be even better. Suave and classy.

Really liked the Coulaine Turpenay (I think a bit more than you did) when I opened a bottle a few weeks ago. I didn't find the burnt/woody aspect to it you noted, thought it was very pure, elegant and nicely structured. I plan on looking out for more from them.

I really liked the Coulaine Bonnaventure 2006. Not so much the 2008 Les Picasses.

I may buy a few bottles of this Turpenay to lay down for a few years.
