WTN Falanghina Colle Imperatrice 2009

by MattThr » Mon Jun 21, 2010 6:53 am

I bought this because I'd never come across the Falanghina grape before and I was curious. Flicking through my wine books at home prior to drinking I found terms like "obscure" and "dull" and very little useful information, which didn't fill me with hope but still ...

=====

Wine has a pungent aroma of peaches and pears. In the mouth these initial impressions are almost immediately elbowed aside by some insistent flavours of green apple and lime which, after a lengthy tour around your palate, eventually get washed away by some fresh, clean minerals in the finish. The wine lingers well and I found myself picking out notes of gunflint and pineapple from my back teeth some minutes after a mouthful. Impressive combination of full fruit flavours with a dry, refreshing finish: 5/5

Nice note.

I think some of the wine books haven't caught up to the current reality, which is that so-called minor grapes like Falanghina can make outstanding wine when grown in the right place and when handled properly. Campania is one of the two best white-wine regions in Italy now, which I never would have imagined 15 years ago.
