WTN: Fun wines in NY (08 Germans, Jura, Chinon)

Some really nice wines over the last couple of days with my parents, who are visiting briefly.

2007 Weingut Hirsch Grüner Veltliner Zöbinger Heiligenstein
Closed as hell. Damnit. There's some fruit and herbal flavours that come out with time, but it's very tightly wound and showing just a fraction of the explosive fruit and depth it had on release.

2008 Château de Coulaine Chinon Les Picasses
Delicious stuff with a fresh red and dark fruited character and gentle floral and herbal accents that emerge with air. Very polished and silken textured in the mouth, not quite as firmly structured as Coulaine's '08 Clos de Turpenay and very pleasant to drink now.

2008 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling Spätlese
Great stuff. Amazing scent of flowers and minerals leading into a palate full of rich white fruit drizzled with gentle honeyed, smoky and saline notes, finishing very long with a sweet vanilla flavour emerging and lingering on the back end. The richness and sweetness are clearly in Auslese territory, but there's fantastic balance and elegance here.

2008 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Spätlese
Best bottle I've had yet. Gorgeous floral and mineral notes on top of fresh vivid lime, pear and cherry fruit that has razor sharp precision and the purity of Alpine spring water, very light on its feet with plenty of acidity and serious length. Fantastic Spätlese!

2007 Jacques Puffeney Pinot Noir Arbois
Stunning aromatics; funky, earthy and rose petal scents over fresh strawberry and raspberry fruit with subtler accents of spice, herbs and stone emerging with a little air. Almost weightless in the mouth, conveying flavour with remarkable elegance and a very light, silken touch; there's no shortage of acidity and fine, grainy tannins on the back end with plenty of depth and length.

Nice!

As you know I am a huge fan of Leitz Roseneck Spatlese. I think it is the best wine in his portfolio.

Too bad about the Hirsch, but we're two years out from release & having the wine be closed down does not stun me.
