WTN: Two from Piedmont

A.A. Nuova Cappelletta 14% €8.90 2008 Barbera del Monferrato DOC (Demeter; Certified Organic)

The wine has a clear, garnet red color. It tastes young and fresh. Lively dark red berries, cherry, and subtle earth, nice mineral and light herb aromas are on the nose. Bubbly light fruit on the mouth. Dry with good balance. Mineraly, herby and a great, well balanced finish.

Ascheri 2004 Barolo DOCG Sorano 14% €27

The wine has a clear garnet red color, becoming clearer and more orange towards the edges. Bursting red fruit, which is at first indiscernible, new oak and tar rush the nose. The new oak smell is quite overpowering and reminds of cedar. With a little time some herby anise and cherry become recognizable on the nose as well. On the palate the fiery but somehow limp red fruit overpowers any subtle flavors that could try and show through. As it slides through the palate, I can’t help but feeling a little deceived; lots of extracted, forward fruit but not enough acidity in the end to bring it to a satisfying finish. A halfhearted and presumably artificial tannic structure shows up on the back of the palate as well.

Been awhile since I've posted - but I have been busy tasting. :)

Cheers,
Tyler

Welcome back!

It's sad to have an unsatisfying 2004 Barolo, as that's a fine vintage.

Unfortunately that seems to be the new MO for Ascheri wines since they modernized (what, 7-8 years ago?) Of course they´re not alone in that regard, and they´re probably selling a lot more wine. The style works better for their Barbera and they make an interesting Syrah.
