WTN: Casual Asian BYO (Donnhoff, Bachelet, Christoffel)

by David M. Bueker » Wed Jun 16, 2010 9:43 pm

Dinner with Salil before he heads off for the summer...

2007 Donnhoff Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewachs
Aromatically prismatic - fruit, flowers, stone, dancing girls, cats and dogs living together...you get the point. It's a got a hint at being just barely off dry, but that is more about fruit density than residual sugar. Length like a skyscraper. Outstanding.

2002 Domaine Bachelet Gevrey Chambertin
Imagine Burgundy behind the iron curtain. All the signs are there that is is wonderful wine, but a wall is between the wine and the taster. Time, time, time - at least from a glacial cellar.

1998 J. J. Christoffel Erben Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese
This is in prime form right now, even from a bottle that showed notable ullage. Spice, red fruit & custard creaminess all blended together & served on a platter of slate. Kicks ass now.

That was quick! Not much to say beyond your notes, but those two Rieslings were absolutely stunning. I expect the Bachelet should be a gorgeous wine in some years, though it was really reticent tonight and struggled alongside the Donnhoff and Christoffel.
