Some Good Riesling Recommendations?

by Edmund Mokhtarian » Wed Jun 16, 2010 4:09 pm

Hello everyone,

I was just looking for some good value Rieslings to pick up for everyday drinking. I'm not familiar with the Riesling scene in America or with what's readily available here from other countries, and I'd really appreciate some suggestions, especially of anything on the sweeter side. Auslese/Beerauslese from Germany tend to be my favorites.

Thanks for the help.

If you want beerenauslese then bargain is not normally the word to use, EXCEPT(!!) for the wines of Kurt Darting. They produce BA type wines on a regular basis that can be had for fairly reasonable prices. I recently posted on a Rieslaner Beerenauslese (I know, not Riesling, but what a wine) from Darting that might be up your alley.

I would suggest picking through the 2006 German vintage wines that are surely yet to be found in many retail stores. You can have your cake and eat it too with wines priced and labeled ´kabinett´and ´spätlese´, but with the must-weight of regular vintage auslese or in some cases even BA. Even if 2007 is your only option, there are plenty of sweeter and richer wines to be found. You can´t go wrong with Terry Theise Selections from Skurnik or Rudi Wiestas importers. Check the back label.

Cheers,
Bill

look for muller-catoir's auslesen - bargain BA I always say - and delicious.

otherwise, buy selbach and loosen and fritz haag.
