World Cup Wines!

by Michael K » Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:43 pm

I love Football, the real futbol that is! I grew up with Hockey and Soccer and love the speed of both and can't for the life of me watch American Football because the game is so very slow. 5 minutes of rest for every 10 seconds of play. (I should specify, by watching I mean in person at the game, not on TV where there is all the commentary to fill in the holes) I took some UK clients to see the Patriots play this year in Wembley and they got so VERY bored with all the breaks in action and the commercial breaks. (At least Canadian rules Football has only three downs so there is a lot more ball in the air action!). Soccer really has not breaks, so something is happening all the time. Also I use to play rugby where when you laid hit on someone, it hurt you too, but again no real break in action.

Anyways, glad the World Cup is back on and at a reasonable time. Boston was a veritable dead city this morning. Not sure how many people were staying home to watch this but it must have been more than half the city,.... no cars on the road at all!

So got a few bottles this weekend to open in honor of the games, all from SA.

Villafonte C
Hamilton Russel Chardonnay
Hamilton Russel Pinot Noir.

anyone else pulling out themed bottles :)

One more comment, ticket sales were always known to be very low but it is really a shame to see 1/2 empty stadiums for these games. Anyone watch the France v Uruguay or South Korea v Greece games? So many empty seats. I wish I could be there.

Not yet but I've had wines from 21 of the 32 countries competing in the World Cup. Some friends and I are thinking of doing a "knockout" event pitting wines from the different countries against each other, probably a little later in the competition. May be difficult to find a North Korean entry though

My "wine" during the USA-England match was Sam Adams Summer Ale on tap at the golf course where I was playing.

Kudos to FIFA for not caving in to typical TV demands for commercial breaks. Although i am not quite sure when beer filled people are supposed to go to the restroom.

Wound up needing some filling food for the US-England match following a 56 mi. bike ride. Went to Casa do Leitao in beautiful downtown Elizabeth (NJ) for the signature dish (Leitao - Portuguese for roast suckling pig) and the game. Joao, the proprietor, asked me if I'd like some Douro wine and pulled the cork on an '07 Quinta dos Aciprestes Tinto, which drank very nicely for a QPR Douro, especially after getting some air. More substance than the '06 version. If anyone is in the area they should check this place out - the best leitao I've had in the states and some decent, well priced Portuguese wine. It is a bit of a hole in the wall in an unlikely location, and I'd love to see him get more business.

Today we had US craft beers with the Germany'-Australia game, so I just can't seem to get the national pairings down right!

Michael, who is the importer of the Hamilton Russell wines. I checked out their web page(s) but don't see than information. They do sound like wines I would seek out. What price range are they in? Thanks.

Not Michael but the US importer for Hamilton Russell is Vineyard Brands.

I've been mostly drinking beer during the Cup so far. I did have a wine with dinner after the USA v. ENG game but I couldn't even tell you what it was. I'll probably be a bit more calm for the next few days and then fall apart on Saturday again. I will say it's been very hot and humid here so crisp bitter beer has been a better accompaniment to the football.
