Any opinions on these dessert wines?

by Jim Grow » Fri Jun 11, 2010 6:52 pm

I bought a few dessert wines recently for 1/2 price and have no idea when to open them but assume they are ready to go.

All in 1/2 bottles

1999 Ravenswood LH Gewurztraminer-----------------12.4 %abv with r.s. of 79 g/l---T.A. of O.68---pH of 3.0
2003 Artesa LH Gewurztraminer------------------------11.9 %-abv with r.s. of 98 g/l
2002 Conn Valley Vineyard LH Chardonnay-------------11.6 %abv with r.s. of 224.9 g/l (dark amber in color)
2003 Dry Creek Soleil LH Sauvignon Blanc-------------13.0 % abv with r.s. of 90 g/l

Jim, none of them are lighting my fire. If price is known, it could, but not likely to make a difference for me.

I would presume that they are all ready to drink. I last had the Ravenswood in the early '90s & while nice it was nothing to write home about. I have never had the rest.

Really sweet wines such as icewines start at r.s. of 100g/L but most are well north of that with a good level of acidity (between 180 g/L to north of 300 g/L) and these icewines can have a lifespan in the 10-25 year range or longer. Your wines are lower sugar levels than that and are really at the 10 year mark, especially with unknown storage conditions, so I would agree, consume.

Well, Jim.....I ain't no ant...but I'll chime in anyway. :-)

Not had the Artesa or the ConnVlly....but that won't stop me from offering up an opinion!!

I really liked both the Ravenswood and the DryCreek. The Ravenswood is more like a German BA than anything. The DCV is more like
an Italian passito...not much botrytis that I could pick up.
Don't be fooled by the ConnVlly color. Most Calif dessert wines tend to brown a bit early, oftentimes they'll look like an old PX than anything.
But I've found they're still delicious.
I would think all of these will still be good drinking 10 yrs down the road...even if pretty dark colored.

The only wine I've had from Artesa is the Cabernet Sauvignon but I found it to be a very nice QPR so will be interested to hear your opinion on the Artesa Gewurztraminer.
