WN: More Heitz Pleasure (Petit Verdot!)

by Brian K Miller » Wed Jun 09, 2010 10:57 am

2006 Heitz Petit Verdot. I love this wine, which they only made for a couple of years! Incredibly rich nose...oaky as all hell but it somehow works in hedonistic deliciousness of smell here. Palate is a little more restrained than the nose...very much dark fruit-blackberry? cassis? anise. Very earthy with layers of flavors...caramel from the oak (but not excessive...just another note that adds to the deliciousness), seems to have plenty of acidity. Great wine...sold out, and they did not make a Petit Verdot varietal bottling recently. :(

Bonus points for the correct use of varietal in a tasting note.

I agree, I liked this wine too. Too bad no more recent bottlings. Did they lose a contract grower?

Are you certain they have stopped making it? Their website doesn't show any vintages for "Bordeaux variety" reds past 2006, and most are 2005.

I don't know. :( The gentleman at the tasting room mentioned "they" were selling the grapes from later vintages to another winery and I, probably mistakingly, assumed that the "they" were the Heitz family. "They" may be the growers...I don't think the Heitz own a large amount of estate vineyards, but I don't know???
