WTN: Duhart Milon, Couly Dutheil

Lingering impressions from the last couple days:

1998 Duhart Milon, Bordeaux: Eh. Just eh. An hour in a decanter helped out a lot, but even then this wine didn't show well without food. Not all that aromatic, not all that much going on in the palate. At the very least it's missing that essential something that distinguishes classed growths from the rest of the pack. Tired or dormant? My vote: tired.

2007 Couly Dutheil Chinon: A recent and uninformed purchase, which I shamefacedly admit to making because I had this nagging feeling that it was a Loire name of some repute. As I tried to get back the memory, Rahsaan's face appeared in a bubble over the bottle I held in my hand which at the time I took as a good sign. Instead, he must have been trying to warn me away. This wine is green (underripe, not herbaceous) and boring. I nursed a glass for an hour last night, before, during and after dinner, and it didn't budge. It resolutely stayed exactly where it was on first pour, and that wasn't a good place. It's not the reticence of a shy wine, the restaint of a wine that has more to give but just can't right now, it was the emptiness of a wine that simply has nothing more than that to show for itself. I never finished the glass.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Well if you have any more of the Duhart-Milon at least you will be able to sell them. Some of the Lafite-love is rubbing off on Duhart - prices are climbing.

The problem with the second wine is a vintage characteristic. 2007 was a difficult year for Loire reds, and there are a lot of green, vegetal, under-ripe wines out there. Only those of Baudry spring to mind as a convincing exception - Bernard and son Mathieu seemed to work within the confines of the vintage, making lighter wines but still clean, fresh and free of green.

What's causing this - shared ownership/winemakers/consultants, geography, etc?

Agree re. Baudry's 07s. Gorgeous wines across the board.

Really, Duhart? I've seen it on the Carraudes--was shocked to see a bottle running close to $300 on an auction website the other day. Had me rubbing my eyes in disbelief. Didn't realize that Duhart was also benefitting. So odd.

Thanks for the tip re the '07's and the word 'vegetal'--that's a better description than what I used. I'll resist the temptation to buy anything but Baudry (along with Joguet, perhaps my favorite Loire producer).

Ownership/relationship to the vauted Lafite. A very similar label probably does not hurt either.

I was never impressed with Duhart until 2000 or so. Any time I've had a bottle from the '90s or '80s I have been left thinking "why did I bother."
