when you move to Inwood.

Namely, Don Rice may bring over a Welcome-Wagon bottle of 1985 Huet Clos du Bourg Vouvray Moelleux.

My only previous experience with this wine was two bottles I bought in Rennes during summer 2008. They weren't bad, but they weren't great either as they leaned too heavily on the sugar but without a rich texture to match.

This bottle showed much better, as it opened with air to provide a tannic but round and luscious frame to support all that dark brown golden sugary fruit. Not a grand wine (I guess that's due to the vintage?) but a lovely way to be welcomed.

Is Inwood north of the island? If so, welcome and looking forward to offlines with you.

It's north of Staten Island

More seriously, it's the last neighborhood on the northern tip of Manhattan. And yes, I look forward to seeing you (and all the other endless Nyc offliners)..

My wife and I will be in Manhattan this coming October.
Tell me do the cabs, subway, & buses run that far North in Manhattan? I was always under the impression that City people didn't consider Inwood in New York?

I am sure you will be busy but if you have time to fit me in the rotation I would be happy to see you.

No cabs, subways, or buses. But we do have paved roads, so at least we can drive our cars smoothly. :D

I don't know which 'City' people you're talking about! But then again I grew up in Northern Manhattan and the Western Bronx, so my perspective is tilted.

I know considering how shy and quiet I am by nature it will be difficult for you to accept the fact that I was born in Manhattan. Left in the first grade for Vermont, but remember vaguely living in the Bronx before I left with my parents. Lived on Walton Ave I think, is the street still there? Would be great to see you, hopefully it'll work out.

Inwood's great, and - amazing perhaps to hear if you're one of the many who think all of Manhattan is nothing but a Standing Room Only tourist park - bucolic and serene even. Inwood Hill Park is beautiful, and large, and so is the top of Riverside Park on the other side of the neighborhood. And as it's the tip of Manhattan, it's bordered on 3 sides by water.

And yes, the subway runs there. Inwood Station is the top of the "A" line, and the "1" trains connect Manhattan to the Bronx via several stops in the area.

No Hard Rock Cafe, though. Shame....

Inwood is indeed nice area. And from a wine standpoint one could do worse than to have PJs as a local store. I recently met Don for first time, nice guy, so good start to neighborhood!

Huet sounds fun.

I actually live in REAL bucolic splendor, in the middle of a state forest at the top of NJ. Just outside my front door it opens up into 6,000 acres of wooded hills and lakes where I hike, swim, ride dirt bikes and fend off bears (if I'm carrying my lucky salmon) and generally decompress after work.

But I've worked in and around NYC most of my adult life, and sometimes lived within swimming distance on the Jersey side of the Hudson. And even though I live farther away now, I'm still on morning radio in New York. That means I continue to travel all over the boroughs for my job, and often after work on remotes and functions, which is a real treat.

Which is why I can say: many areas of the City AREN'T tainted. No, there is no endless tundra. And there's plenty of light pollution at night, frustrating anyone who wants to see even the moon sometimes. But outside the neon tourist areas are islands of green, some man-made, some designed. There are bird sanctuaries, horse riding havens, working and historical farms, forested glens. Remember, NYC is huge. Huge. They just have not enough time to pave over it all yet!
