- 2003 MacPhail Pinot Noir Toulouse Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
Tasted over 2 nights next the R-C Savoy - Blind
Both wines were similar in color. Just a hint of brown but basically looking young and fresh. The first aromas were of tremendous fruit and spice along with olives. A little dusty musty quality but not TCA. With time the aromas showed more like a barolo with heat. Definite heat on the nose. On the second day the heat had backed off a bit. The palate was strange at first. Glycerol oak and heat. It is ripe and full bodied. I must say I went back and forth on this. Sometimes I found it earthy, flowery, fruity and interesting and other times it seemed hot and alcoholic. After the second night the heat was the real party zapper. Had over 2 nights next to the Macphail Toulouse - Blind
This was a schizophrenic wine for me. Although at no point was it great, there were moments were it was intriguing and pleasant. On the nose were sour cherries, spice and oak. Showing fresher. No heat. On the second night not much of a change until I revisited at the end of the night and got a blast of what smelled like VA. The wine has a nice mouth-feel. On the rounder side. Easy to drink. More fruit based than the Macphail which kind of surprised me. The wine is tasty but lacks depth and the finish is weak. By the end of the second night it had completely fallen apart. Disappointing. I'll give it an 86 for its good moments. i had higher hopes. (86 pts.)
Cheers,
Jason
