WTN: 2004 Pegau

by David M. Bueker » Tue May 25, 2010 7:21 am

Good friend Joe Huber brought the '04 Pegau to a dinner last Friday, and since I was having lamb in a pepper sauce there was an appropriate match. The wine is drinking very well right now, though I would not say that it is developed. Rather there is still qutie a lot of youthful fruit, but also herbal and leathery nuances that are just starting to emerge. I very much like the balance of the wine, as it reminds me more of a year like '99 (the '04 is richer but just as well balanced) versus some of the riper years that are less to my taste.

Thanks, David. I purchased some of this in part as a birthyear wine for our son (not to mention that I adore Pegau's wines). I don't intend to open any for a goodly number of years yet, but it's nice to hear progress reports.

I don't think I've ever tasted a Pegau that went over the hill, though I didn't keep my 92s and 93s past age 10. Still, hoping the 04 goes past 20, while a good bet, doesn't seem to me like a sure thing. Maybe you should start your child on wine at age 10.

Thanks for the note. Mine will continue to sleep but I was lucky to have a friend share a bottle with me a few years back (decanted for 24 hours) and it was outstanding.
