WTN: A nice affordable burg

by Tom N. » Sun May 23, 2010 8:51 pm

Light transparent ruby. Gorgeous pinot nose of moist forest floor and cherries. Sweet red fruit (mostly strawberries and red raspberries) on entry followed by refreshing acidity and just enought smooth tannins to balance the wine out. Medium to long finish of acidic red fruit. A delightful light to medium bodied wine. Great match with a steelhead filet grilled with lemon, butter and garlic sauce which enhances the sweet fruit of the wine.

Wine: Bourgogne, Hautes Cotes de Nuit, 2006 Chateau Dufouleur Freres 13% abv. $22 CAN$ I wish  I had bought more than 2 bottles.

Does anyone know what a bourgogne with a Hautes Cotes de Nuit name means?

I don't think this means it is a Cotes de Nuit villages wine, or does it?

It is not Cotes de Nuits villages. The Hautes Cotes is a different area in the Cotes de Nuits, pretty much higher on the hill sides if I recall correctly. I have had some nice Hautes Cotes wines from Meo-Camuzet.

HCdNV is its own 'region'. A collection of villages to the west of the Cotes de Nuits. It's up the hills from Nuits St George, hence the 'Haut' part.

I had never heard of Dufouleur until I tasted some of their wines at an expo a year ago here in SP and was very impressed, particularly with a NSG Hospices de Nuits. Apparently it's an old line firm that fell into hard times but is being revitalized by the new generation. Still well below the radar screen, and priced accordingly, so worth investigating.

Hola Oswaldo,

It may not stay under the radar long. This particular wine received a Decanter silver medal for 2009. That should raise the wineries profile some.
