WTN: 2002 Blanc de Lynch-Bages

by Oswaldo Costa » Sun May 23, 2010 7:28 am

2002 Blanc de Lynch-Bages Pauillac 12.5%
Two years ago I had a half bottle of this that was sublime, so I picked up six halves (from the same store) and six fulls (from another). All have turned out to be potably or inpotably premoxed, making this my unluckiest purchase. But, just to taunt me, the final bottle, drunk last night, lived up to the first. Aromas were a beguiling mix of jasmine, almonds, honey, lime and gunflint. Good acidity, with no trace of muscularity or oak, suggesting power derived from delicacy and inner composure. Like David Carradine, before he mishung himself. There’s an unconventional streak here that would not be amiss in the Jura, but seems utterly wild from such a mainstream producer. Memorable in a field of bad memories.

You have my deepest sympathies! This kind of stuff can be very frustrating.

At least the last bottle was good. But I assume it wasn't good enough for you to contemplate buying more?

Were your sources in different countries, or is it possible both batches suffered the same fate in transit?

I hope for better from my 04s.

It's hard to buy more when the wine is so good at its best but the record so spotty... I'd love to hear about others' experiences, but it doesn't seem to get many TNs.

The six half bottles came from the same store in NY where I had bought the first one. The six full bottles came from a store in CT, so could have been same means of transport. Yet some bottles were affected more than others. The usual maddening wine inconstancy.

Yikes, sympathies over the bad hit rate with your bottles - but at least good to hear this last one showed well.
