- 2006 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Great Oak Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (5/7/2010)
Not that an 83 point wine is undrinkable but not what I would expect from swan. I noticed Gutting has been enjoyed this wine so maybe this bottle had some type of problem. I didn't notice a major "flaw". It was just over ripe and hot. The nose had a grapefruit quality that I would expect from RRV as well as what seemed like VA. The pleasantness of the fruit was overshadowed by the ripeness. I still have another bottle but not sure if I should try it or just bury it and hope for the best. (83 pts.)

Here's the release note:
http://www.swanwinery.com/1108_newsletter.phpIf it was Rod doing that writing, he wasn't all that enthusiastic about it. He takes Great Oak as his great farming challenge - he's often written about the difficulties of that particular plot.
I'd give it another year or four. I haven't even tried my '04 Great Oak yet.
Thanks for giving me motivation not to rush out and open a bottle!
John

I don't have this one, but I do have the 2004 and 2005, neither of which I have tried. Maybe this week.
Cheers, Jim

The 2005 was very good but I would at least 4 or 5 more years.

I don't know anything about the wine but that's an unfortunate name for a vineyard.
I guess it refers to a nearby tree?
