And a mini-test of the BD calendar. Picked up three bottles of each for under $40 recently and wanted to try them before putting away for a handful of years. The flesh is weak, but it’s strong compared to the brain.
2004 Olivier Guyot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 13.5%
Imported by Michael Skurnik. Elegant dark cherry with tar and sage. Lovely mouth feel, acid and fruit well balanced, light bitter finish. Not closed & no green meanies. Transmits a sense of seriousness, as if pleasure is not something to be taken lightly (hey, you’re gonna carry that weight, a long time). Still in diapers, but open for business. Tuesday evening was Root.
2006 Domaine Moillard Beaune Epenottes 1er Cru 13.5%
Imported by Metropolis Wine Merchants. A bit tight, with stemmy cherry, iodine and cloves. Good acidity and body, salty finish. Oddly, instead of softening with food, it became a bit sour and metallic. Puzzling, but we had no difficulty downing. Wednesday evening was one of those “Don't drink anything” moments (hmmm).
2006 Domaine Moillard Vosne-Romanée Beaux Monts 1er Cru 13.5%
Imported by Metropolis Wine Merchants. Tight nose, with dark sour cherry and rose petals. Lively acidity, good weight, long finish. Very fine and chiseled, but devoid of any sense of humor; won’t even smile even for the camera. Adult entertainment. Uncompromising. Thursday evening (last night) was Leaf.
Still don't believe in the BD calendar, but this trio was the first strike in favor.
