WTN: '01 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese

Silly titles would not do justice to this wine.

2001 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese
This is in a great drinking place right now. Smokiness, minerality and a layer of silken fruit that glides over the palate until it hits the bracing finishing acids. Tastes almost halbtrocken at this point, so it's also a great food partner. The wine is living up to its lofty press and potential.

Have you tried the Spätlese 98 Goldkapsel? I found it to be over the top.. At least the bottle I tried.

Not in a long time, but there's has never been a Donnhoff wine I considered over the top.

David,
Any recent notes on the '02 of the same wine? I missed out on the whole '01 vintage from Dönnhoff.

Larry - sorry to mis your quesiton for 10 days, but I did have a taste of the 2002 last Christmas. It was delicious if not quite so multi-faceted as the 2001.

David,
Sorry to miss your reply for 1 day but thanks. Just yesterday I was clearing data from an old computer and found some tasting notes I had saved from that other board from several years ago. Included was your release tasting notes on the '02 Dönnhoff. You thought quite highly of it. At Christmas how was the acidity compared to the '01?

The '02 is gentler on the teeth than the '01, but I find both balanced.
