WTN: Pio Cesare Ornato Barolo 2000

by Jay Labrador » Fri May 14, 2010 11:13 am

Had dinner at Pepato with Jocel and Johnny. Just one wine this time. The waiters, who know us well, offered us a big table, expecting lots of bottles but they were quite surprised to see we were sharing only one bottle between the three of us. Usually, we have a bottle each. Somehow, this seemed more civilized!

Quite dark. Big wine, smoke and sweet ripe fruit. Meaty. Whisper of mushroom that really paired well with truffled beef. Modern style and easy to drink. Tannins are sufficiently soft with the acidity providing most of the structure. I sense it could develop a little more complexity with just a bit more bottle age or decanting time but this is getting really close to peak. Excellent.

After dinner, we walked a few meters over to Barcino as I heard Sergi was in town and would be at his tapas bar. Unfortunately, he wasn't around the time we were there but we did get to meet up with a couple more friends - Jaq, Uri, Gail, Ines and Rafael. Shared a bottle of very lemony Vilarnau Brut Cava NV with everyone. Great wine for a very warm summer night.

Pio Cesare was the first Barolo I ever had--always will have a soft spot for it.

Say, a friend of mine knows a guy in Seattle who is closing down his importing business and selling off his remaining inventory--mostly Italian. The friend will be stopping in tomorrow and picking up a bunch of bottles. Prices range from $20 to $32 and I authorized him to grab me anything from 2000, 2001 or 2004. I have no idea what's going to show up but at those prices, I almost don't care. Wish me luck.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
