WTN: de Ladoucette, Foillard, Pithon

2000 de Ladoucette Pouilly-Fumé - France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé (5/6/2010)
From .375ml. Color was a perfect light hay. Showing some aged complex aromas of grilled nuts, butterscotch and crushed flowers. Good flovors on the palate with some lively acidity and decent length. A bit short in the midpalate and not as broad as I had hoped. Still for what this is, it performed quite well. Good start to nice meal. We had small plates of potted smoked prawns and pig candy (brown sugar coated applewood smoked bacon with some spice). Also had some ricotta ravioli with beet greens, roasted garlic, parmigiano fricco and grilled asparagus with a sunnyside egg, brown butter and meyer lemon.

2007 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon (5/6/2010)
This wine is just getting better and better. It is easily the greatest cru Beaujolais I've ever enjoyed. It drinks at the level ofgrand cru. Like a top wine from Gevrey. A wine that makes you sit up and take notice. Amazing aromas of asian spice, cinnamon, white pepper and dark cherry fruits that shift and morph over the course of the night. The palate is broad and layered with the wonderful Gamay funk of earth and stone. Lively acidity and minerals fill out the initial flavors, then sappy red fruits coat the midpalate. Really nice length on the finish. Just a georgous wine that is so enjoyable at this point. I have 2 bottles left and hope to God I can hold off to see how they develop. It's wines like this that make my day. The '07 is special. The '08 is not so special. We enjoyed this with crispy pork belly with shelled beans, cippolini onions, roasted garlic, baby carrots anda wonderful sauce. Also had Wagyu beef loin with roasted fingerlings and creamed spinach. YUM!!!

2004 Domaine Jo Pithon Coteaux du Layon Les Quatres Villages - France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon (5/6/2010)
Lisa brought this bottle. It was from her dear friend Robin's collection and we toasted to her memory. This seemed closed to me, though as I read some of the CT notes perhaps not. Aromas of almonds, a bit of sherry and boytritis. The palate is uninspiring with lower acidity than I like. There is a bitter not on the end. A rather uninspiring sweet wine despite the fact that it came from a very sweet place. Had this with dulce de leche custard, caramel, churros and whipped cream.
Regards,
Gregg

This Board (and others) love affari with Foillard has to stop! Okay, so why does the 08 suck?

I've had the 2008 Foillard a few times and don't think it sucks, at all. The last couple have been a little grumpy, taking awhile in the decanter to stretch out. I think it has more stuffing than 2007 while remaining a wine of grace.

Did I say the '08 sucked? It's clearly not as good, imho as the '07, but it doesn't suck. I'm not that enamored with the '08 vintage on a whole. I think the few I've tried, Brun (all), Foillard, Tete, Coquelet Chiroubles, Bouland Morgon VV just didn't hit many highs for me. I'm holding out for '09.

Apologies, my hyperbole. I found the 07 Foillard more elegant with a gossamer texture, and I could see preferring it. I remain optimistic that the 2008 will open up and impress people.

Greg, no, you didn't say it sucked, I did. But given the choice between 'special' and 'not so', there is a definate preference there as to which one you prefer and would buy again. Interesting that both you and Lyle (from disorder) both trash the 08's. What didn't you like about it? The reason I'm asking is that I was just about to order some 08 Bojo's...
In my mind, I feel -- like Burgundy -- Beaujolais have really been on a roll this decade, even the so called 'off -years' have provided enjoyment, even if they are 'different'.

Basically the '08s seem dull and unfocused to me. The Foillard may have been closed. I hope I get the chance to try them later on. YMMV. I've heard so many great things from my brokers, that '09 sems like the real deal. I'm hoping so. In any case I bought Brun and Coquelet for the restaurant and it sold well. The wines work with food so it's not too tough a sell. If you have had the chance to try the '07 Foillard, it's really just in a another league...again IMHO.

Ok, thanks! I think the 09's should be sold as futures, instead of Bordeaux (which I really cannot get excited about these days). Unfortunately, I think the 07 F is sold out :(
