WTN: Inniskillin Winemaker's Series Chardonnay 2007

by Bruce Hayes » Fri May 07, 2010 8:16 am

Montague Vineyard
VQA Four Mile Creek, Niagara Peninsula

Rich yellow-light gold in the glass.

Nothing much happening on the nose.

Medium weight, creamy, pear, a hint of apple, perfumed, rich, vanilla-caramel, a bit of a sharp edge. After a bit of time, the fruit faded and the wine became dominated by the oak.

A sharp edge and oak on the finish.

Not a style I am fond of.

Purchased on sale at around $15 (Canadian).

I don't know ... but something tells me that Inniskillin wines just aren't what they used to be since ownership changed. I used to love Inniskillin in the late 90's and well into the new decade ... but later on I noticed a loss of a certain deft touch that the wines used to display. Am I alone in thinking this to be the case?

Hi Paul.

For my part, I haven't followed Inniskillin that closely over the years to make a determination. Was unaware of an ownership change. Who are the new owners?

"In April 2006, Constellation Brands bought Inniskillin's parent company Vincor International Inc., which became Vincor Canada. Later that year Karl Kaiser went into retirement, but stayed on as a consultant for Inniskillin's ice wine activities, and Ziraldo left the winery and his position as president."

More details here

For me, the change has been palpable... I loved the old Inniskillin.
