It is the fate of Aldi never to be taken seriously in the US, despite its prominent status in Europe, because over here it is regarded as a sort of "thrifty" grocery store for those trying to save a buck. But if you look harder, you find they carry some pretty nice gourmet items, albeit only at their nicer locations, such as we have here in Bloomington (IN). And on occasion, they actually have some quite noteworthy limited-availability wines. Oddly, a friend actually picked these up in the much less affluent Bedford (IN), where they don't sell very quickly. Anyway, these are genuine Eisweins, $12 for 500ml, which is just astounding.
St. Gisbertus Weinkellerei, Eiswein, Rheinhessen 2007
Beautiful burnished gold/bronze color. Great nose. Pear, pinapple, floral notes, honey, and a touch of nutmeg. Full bodied, rich, viscous, and the steely acidity characteristic of 2007 gives excellent definition and balance. A desert wine of remarkable quality. Unbelievable value, being available at Aldi in the US for just $12 per 500ml bottle (and this is the genuine, frozen on the vine article). Should last for another 5 - 10 years. Excellent / Exceptional (89 - 91) [1/24/10]
St. Gisbertus Weinkellerei, Eiswein Rheinhessen 2008
A nice enough little sweet wine, with pear, pinapple, and with light notes of flowers, honey, and spice. Medium bodied, and having neither the great richness or excellent acidity of the surprisingly excellent 2007. But, nonetheless, still a remarkable value, and not so much a desert wine as a sweet wine that will provide versatile picnic and brunch drinking. Very Good (85 - 87) [3/13/10]
