Amarone Vintage?

by David Constable » Mon May 03, 2010 1:50 pm

I've been holding on to two bottles of Amarone, different vintage, and would like to know when the best year is to drink them?

Rocca Alata Amarone 2004

Farina Amarone 2003

I've kept them for about two years but am worried that the best time to drink and enjoy them may already have passed?

Thank you for your help.

David, welcome! Haven't personally had either of these wines, but at 6-7 years I wouldn't be worried about missing the boat on good quality Amarone. A bit of rummaging around turned up a supportive tasting note on your 03 Farina: "Nice spice and dark red colour. Decanted for 60 minutes. Starting to mature well, expect better next bottle in about 6 months time." Right now might be the beginning of it's prime drinking window which could extend a few years. Didn't find anything on your 04 and have no personal experience with that producer, but I believe it's regarded as a 'higher end' wine, so if everything else were otherwise fairly equal I'd guess your 04 would have an overall longer lifespan because of the cooler vintage.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

David, Hello and Welcome ...

Jenise is "right on". Both of your wines should cellar comfortably until 2014 or longer if well stored.

Jenise and Daniel,

That's great. Thanks you both for your replies, it's most appreciated. Both wines were given to me as gifts and I want to put them to best use and drink them when the time is right. Your research and knowledge will help me gain the best from both bottles.

Many thanks,

David
