WTN: 2000 Cantenac Brown

by Rudi Finkler » Sun May 02, 2010 3:38 am

About five or six years ago, I opened a bottle of this splendid Margaux. What a surprise... dense and pure, of course too young then, but very, very promising...
Friday night I couldn’t resist any longer and opened another bottle. Lots of sediments in the bottle. A sweet complex bouquet of cassis, black currant, tobacco, and cedarwood. Fruity attack on the palate, with another wave of black berry fruit nicely balanced out with notes of licorice, spices, and minerals. Very classical great red Bordeaux. The tannins are ripe now, and the delicious finish lingers on and on... Certainly the best Cantenac Brown I had in three decades.

Nice note! I have some 2000 CB, and now I will have to ensure it is buried deep in the cellar.

But not too deep, please... this CB provides so much pleasure at present. :)

Thanks for the note Rudy! I have some 375s of the 2000 CB and will plan to try one soon. Mine are not buried too far.

Good idea, Larry. I can’t imagine a better time than now, especially for 375s...

Opened a 375ml on 5/9 for Mother's day lunch with grilled sirloin steak. Out of the 375ml it was certainly similar to your notes. Opened about 1 hr ahead and not decanted. Also sure that there is no hurry to drink these. The tannins were starting to round off but still a way to go. The showing on the palate was better than the somewhat reticent nose on this bottle. Thanks again for the recommendation Rudy.

What a great review. Inventory's not in the room with me but I hope I hope I hope I own some of this!
