WTN: Disappointing '99 H. Lignier MSD

by David M. Bueker » Wed Apr 28, 2010 8:09 pm

1999 Hubert Lignier Morey St. Denis
This is getting too funky for its own good. There's still some good fruit lurking there, and a bit of earthiness creeps through, but over it all is this rotting cabbage funk that is very unpleasant. I've had several bottles of this wine over the years (same source - last prior bottle in late 2008), and none have showed any trace of this cabbage character. It's quite disturbing and not any fun at all.

David,

So the other bottles were much better? I should hope so! ;)

Isn't this where the 'Burgundy Expert' steps in to say "this needs 10 more years, minimum"? :P

Seriously, do you think this is some kind of brett or other bacteria?

I'm not really sure what it was, but I have run into that rotting cabbage scent in other Burgs before, so it's not just this bottle. Usually it's been from wines that were lesser years/producers though.

I also posted this note on eBob & the "99's are not in a good place" comment came out.

This was kinda what my post was alluding to, but my own experience with 99's - NOT Grand Cru - have been that of a pretty open vintage throughout most of it's life (village & 1er cru). Saying that, your bottle sounds 'off'. Rotting cabbage and pinot is not good.
