So Lettie Teague got the job at WSJ

by Jenise » Tue Apr 27, 2010 9:44 pm

...well, to share with Jay McInerny, or however you spell it.

Haven't really read that much by her, but I sense that she's more of a populist type and this article in defense of over 14% wines seems to confirm that.

Thoughts, anyone?

I don't think I'll be reading the WSJ wine section for quality writing/analysis any time soon then...

At least with John and Dottie you got some value out of their efforts to assess different segments of the market. I have found the first two articles from Jay offer nothing new but at least they did not seem to be complete fluff. Not sure where Lettie Teague is coming from in some of her writting. The 14% I found annoying. Same with her recent article in Food and Wine on what makes a wine great where she does not even address that question. Not sure how she became to be a "respected" wine writer.

In quotes due to the defenders she has on another site.

I usually enjoyed her columns in Food and Wine, although more for entertainment than for whatever information there was on wine.

I was going to say the same thing, I get F&W and there is little in the way of wine articles in there, hers is one of them and they made for an entertaining read, but if I wanted to get info on wine, I was looking elsewhere.

I generally found her F&W columns amusing , but not very informative to me. But we're not the target audience, the fact that one posts on a wine bulletin board kind of means you know at least the basics, which she doesn't assume. I think same applies at WSJ.

I liked Dr Vino's take on Jay Mc, all "wealth porn" and "wine bling."

I don't usually post links to other BBs but if anyone really wants to take a deeper look into the Ms Teague's writting you should read the thread at Berskers http://wineberserkers.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=19278 that discusses her recent article that appeared in food and wine and how the participants of the tasting/dinner that is the basis for the article describe the same event.

She says that high alcohol improves the taste of wine. I thought alchohol tasted like Vodka.

I am not sure what you guys saw, but Ed Kurtzman did not look very "burly" to me in the photo. I would have plugged in something else... :)

Yeah, I know. I was just trying to be snarky. But I can't think of a newspaper wine column that I would actually miss were it to go away. After looking at Ms. Teague's F&W column linked on the Winebeserkers I think her main readership at the WSJ just might be the sort of he-man great wine collectors that she describes in her article.

It's a shame that John and Dottie were abruptly canned. Their column in the Journal was popular for years, and for good reason. I guess they were making too much money and the paper is cutting back on everything. Lettie and some guy whose name I forget now have the job and are probably making much less. In this case I think you get what you pay for.

John and Dottie's column was the main reason I began to have an interest in wine.

I like Lettie. She is down to earth, not at all snobbish, and has a good sense of humor. She's also a 3/10 wine geek.

"3/10" means what? No comprende. But about snobbishness, that's kind of what I had always supposed about her but the Scott Manlin article in F & W someone else points to makes her sound snobby--that is, she certainly made the event she attended sound far snobbier than it actually was. Maybe it was just some form of dramatic license to paint herself the lucky victim, but it wasn't entirely fair to the real people who were there.
