Had dinner at the Buekers' home on Friday. As always, a very fun and relaxed evening with great friends, some really nice wines and food - I stir-fried some cauliflower and cabbage; David did some fantastic burgers on the grill (with home baked buns).
2001 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett
Corked. Romance and tradition win over a wine actually being enjoyable! Not a good start to the night.
2001 Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Spätlese one-star
Starts out with fresh citrus and pear fruits on a light frame, with honeyed and faintly smoky accents that develop with air - but with time this becomes less about the flavours and more about the spine of acidity takes over and becomes increasingly savage, to the point that each sip feels like having the tip of a knife on your tongue.
2007 Schäfer-Fröhlich Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Spätlese
Closing down now, and nowhere near what it was a few months ago. There's still plenty of bright citrus and red fruited flavours with mineral and floral touches, but this doesn't have the power or precision I remember, and with some time the flavours become increasingly reticent until all that's perceptible is just the sulfur and sugar.
2001 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui
Incredibly young right now, but already so delicious with a core of bright black cherry and currant fruit accented by faint spicy and earthy notes and the oak quite subtle and nicely woven into the background. There's plenty of structure lurking underneath; grainy tannins and good acidity that keeps the flavours nice and fresh - lots of time ahead here, though it was hard to stop drinking this (or even just smelling it) after about an hour of air.
A really enjoyable evening, thanks again David and Laura.
