2001 Muga Prado Enea

by Doug Levens » Fri Apr 23, 2010 8:41 pm

Has anyone else tried this? In the past few vintages I have not been impressed with the Prado Enea, but I chalked it up to the vintages rather than the wine making. I figured that 2001 would get things back on track. Comparing this wine to the 91 or 95 in there youth this unfortunately shows a lot more oak treatment.

It is not all bad because it reminds me very much of LdH reserva wine, but it is a change from what I have come to expect from my favorite expression of rioja.

I am saving 1/2 of the bottle for tomorrow, but as of now the jury is still out on this wine as far as I am concerned.

I was under the impression that the Prado Enea is Muga's old style rioja and only used American oak is used?

It is their traditional style rioja which sees several years of oak aging, but something about this oak treatment seems to have changed. Different barrel types, different char level, etc. I am not sure what it is, but the oak is more prevalent than in past years.
