WTN: Good Chorey

by Dale Williams » Fri Apr 23, 2010 4:01 pm

No wine Wed (one Kirin at a sushi place where we ate with a group of friends). Thursday Betsy did the Zuni Cafe chicken with bread salad, plus some yellow beets. Wine was the 2006 Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune. Light and fresh on opening, picks up some weight in time. Red berry (straw and rasp!) fruit, bright soil notes, a hint of smoke. Light tannins, fairly high acidity, but balanced by the fruit, which gets fuller and riper with time. Good length, with an earthy note. Very satisfying for a $20 Burg. B+/B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

That's almost always such a fun, little Burg!

I've had the 2006 as well. Really expansive nose IIRC. Best value in red Burg I've encountered, and with some real character.

Coindidentally, we had a Drouhin Chorey-les Beaune at the tasting at Arthur's Wine Shop at Belk this afternoon (will have to check the vintage.) We had three whites and three reds. I purchased the other two reds--a Moulin a Vent and a Gevrey-Chambertin village. One of the men of the family was there (very tall.) I managed to attend three meet and greets between 4:00 and 6:00 PM. At Arthur's I concentrated on the Drouhin offerings. I had already tasted Burly wines (from Coombsville, Napa) at a Fayetteville Wine Society meeting (where I prefered the 2004 Cab) and I passed up Orin Swift. Then I drove down the road to the Wine Shop at Foxcraft to taste a Pinot Blanc and a Pinot Noir from Ken Wright along with wines from Hirsch (David Hirsch was there) and Failla (marketing director was there.) Then I went to the Dean and Deluca tasting room to kill some time before my 7:30 dinner reservation and sampled wines from Chuck and Ann McMinn (Napa), Morlet and Mark Ray.
