WTN: Foradori Teroldego Rotaliano 2006

by Hoke » Thu Apr 22, 2010 2:31 pm

My, my, my...what a lovely little wine this is.

Foradori Teroldego Rotaliano 2006 is the kind of wine that, if you haven't had it, you should have. Quickly: go out and get some.

This northern Italian variety, related to Syrah, is a remarkable food wine. In the hands of Elisabetta Foradori, it's a spectacularly good wine.

Plump, but not fat; fruity, but never gobby; rich, but not over the top; perfectly, precisely balanced with nice long acids and lovely soft tannins and not overly evident wood, this is a succulent wine in every way.

Gorgeous aromatics and supple, velvety black fruit, with a little chubby blueberry showing at the bottom, this was a textbook example of a wine that could easily handle whatever food was matched with it.

We were in the new and uber-trendy Gruner restaurant in downtown Portland, noshing on some 'pan-Germanic' fare, and each of us had ordered differently. One had the classic Kavalierspitz of Austria, sort of a pot roast in a fragrant broth kind of thing; another had spaetzle with mushrooms (yum!); another had roasted quail with rabbit boudin; and I had mixed house-made wurst with choucroute-style sauerkraut, boiled potatoes, and sweet-spicy mustard.

The Foradori handled it all without a problem. It accommodated itself to the different foods and spices, and kept its style throughout, simply enhancing anything that came its way.

Even after the meal was over and we sat and dawdled and talked, the Foradori was a great after-dinner tipple too, just smoothing out the evening.

Lovely, lovely wine.

I've long been a fan of their Granato, glad to hear the basic is punching above its league.

And I've not had the Granato (not being the wine snob you are).

Hey, I heard the Granato was not released---was it 2006?---and it all went into the Rotaliano that year.

If the Rotaliano is that good, then the Granato must me gorgeous indeed.

(FYI, we have one guy down in the Rogue Valley that has about 80 vines of Teroldego. He has only made one vintage so far---and it was decent stuff!)

Good to hear. When I was first getting into wine, I loved this wine, but then it disappeared for years. Now we have the '07 available here, but I haven't dared to buy it because everyone here describes it as oaky. So any experiences with '07? Is it really marked by oak?

Not yet, Otto; only up to the 2006. Hopefully, someone will chime in.

The 2006 is most certainly NOT over-oaked, I can tell you that.

Granato is only for those possessed of a certain je ne sais quoi...

Interesting. First Giacosa, then Produttori, now Foradori, are eschewing crus in 2006. And it wasn't a bad vintage, after all... In any case, that may explain why the regular is tasting so good.

Well, I opened the '07 tonight. I've seen conflicting info on the oak. Some sources (e.g. Finnish importer's website) say that it is all in used Barrique, others like the producer's website only mention that it is 15-18 months in oak but doesn't mention what age or size it is; others like Polaner's website mentions a mix of large casks and used Barrique. Does anyone know for sure?

I certainly noticed more oak aromas in the '07 than Hoke did in his '06 - but they weren't strong enough to make me dislike the wine, just strong enough to make me wish they weren't there. It has nice bitter (or maybe sour - I'm beginning to think I can't really distinguish between the two... ) aromas that I have come to expect from the variety based on a severely limited sample. But I hope this bitter or sour tang to the herbaceous fruit is the norm because it is incredibly attractive. But it would be much more attractive without that slight chocolatey oak aroma in the background. Quite dense and chewy, but with attractive, refreshing sourness so this is quite easy to drink even though I did notice a touch of oak influence on the palate, too. Perhaps worth setting a bottle aside for a year or two to see if the oak would do the magic trick and disappear. I say magic, because the more experience I have gotten with wines, the more I start to feel that obvious oak sadly doesn't ever really seem to disappear completely, it just changes over time - though, of course, this is will be lifelong experiment to gain a better understanding of this topic.

I've had them both side-by-side, and I prefer the regular TR to the Granito. I think it's more of a pure expression of TR. The Granito has
a bit more extract, but a lot more new Fr.oak that mucks things up I think. And the regular is about 1/3'rd the price of the Granito.

It's Granato, not Granito...

No, it was the 05. They did make a Granato in 06 and based on this tasting note, which popped up about the same time I got an offer on some, I sprung for two bottles. After all, I'd never had a Teroldego and thought it would be a great geeky wine to take to one of Bill Spohn's monthly lunches so well worth the $40 entertainment value. It went yesterday as Bob's bottle, and....

Everyone hated it. Much laughter ensued and Bob is now afraid he won't be invited back. The nose was initially big sweet candied cherry juice, and it was absurdly grapey. Maybe it needed a long wait in a decanter prior to service to calm down and show something else, but on a table covered with such gems as '91 Montelena and '83 Chasse Spleen, it stood out like a tall, acne-covered boy scout in a gentleman's club.

I'm sorry, is this the 2006 Granato you're typing of . . . ?
