WTN: This week's Bordeauxs

by Jay Labrador » Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:33 am

Notes from this week's series of repertoire dinners at Cafe Ysabel. Although we had lots of wines, these were the ones that stood out.

De Puta Madre Verdejo 2008 (?) - I wasn't able to get the vintage but it's a new import so probably 2008. Literally translated, it roughly means "From a Mother Whore" but, as I understand it, it means something like "F***ing awesome!" This is a Verdejo from Rueda, Spain, and produced by the Lurtons of Bordeaux. A little hot with a very subtle oxidative character. Sweetish and a little heavy. A satisfactory aperitif. The wine's name is more interesting than the flavor.

Chateau Giscours 2004 - Dark. Leather, meaty. Wood smoke. Very dry but good fruit on the finish. This has a bit of barnyard on the finish. Quite complex. Needs a few more years to really come together. Long finish. Very good.

Chateau Cantenac Brown 2003 - Sweet nose. Tart. Closed. A bit lean. Not really giving much now. Try again in another 2 years or so.

Chateau Siran 2004 - Fragrant, cigar box. Very dry, savory, fleshy. Medium-bodied. A bit of earth. Dried berries and a touch of cocoa powder. Surprisingly soft and ready. Good length. A very good Bordeaux which seems a good candidate for early drinking.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

I'm having a very hard time understanding the 2003s. There are some comments that at least a few of the wines are already drinking very well, but then I see a note like yours on the Cantenac Brown. The lack of consistency in 2003 poses a cellaring problem.

Hi,

I was given a case of 03 Grand Puy Lacoste by a friend for my 50th birthday.

I broached the case last week and enjoyed a 2000 from the same château at the same meal
(the latter was sigficantly better...).

The 2003 was really, truly, remarkably forward.
*However* it was also impressively short on the aftertaste.

I count on drinking the rest of that case in the next 2/3 years.

And, I'll be perfectly honest: there are some wines that I set aside to take with me when I'm invited to dinner.
(not too expensive, but good and meant to impress the label-conscious).
This 2003 GPL fits the bill perfectly *especially* going on the assumption that very few people actually age wines for years...

Best regards,
Alex R.
