WTN: 2004 Marcarini Barolo Brunate

2004 Marcarini Barolo Brunate 14.0%
Reports of an upcoming bloodbath in Barolo/Barbaresco prices reminded me that I had picked up a half bottle of this at a NY liquidator. Blackberry and tar with a touch of sweat. No rose petals or violets (but yesterday was not a flower day). In the mouth it sits upon the tongue like a firm stool. Not as in the English term for merde, but as in a seating appartus firmly established upon the triple pillars of ample fruit, balancing acidity and satisfying body. Washboard tannins afford pleasant tactility. Generous weight bears high alcohol like gossamer mantle. A fine effort and attractive QPR in the mid $20s but, at this premature point, does not seem to promise idiosyncratic pleasures that would make me want to stash a case and wait a decade for the appropriate payoff.

Oswaldo,

I recently had the 1996. You might want to re-think whether cellaring will pay off. The 1996 was starting to show some lovely things despite the stern nature of the vintage.

I'm a big fan of Marcarini, think the Brunate is pretty special at 15-20 in bigger vintages, a bit less time needed for 93, etc

I recently had a '94 that I liked and even from a less-than heralded vintage, the wine showed well enough for me to consider stashing away reasonably-priced ones from the good vintages.

You guys are all much younger than me, and more patient.

Oswaldo,

I would suggest that both you and Florida Jim need to stop buying what you know are ageworthy wines that require time to blossom. I have little doubt you will still live long enough to enjoy them close to maturity, but your patience seems to be wearing thin.

Jim is still (fairly) youngish, but Oswaldo can't afford to be very patient anymore. His tempus is fugiting and his winged chariot is flying by. He has to drink this stuff up before he croaks, lest someone else gets to enjoy it after he's gone (the horror, the horror).

I'd lovingly put you all in my will, but then you'd all be rooting for my demise.
