WTN: Fontodi's entry level Chianti Classico at maturity

by Tim York » Sat Apr 17, 2010 6:25 am

Yesterday’s bottle of Chianti Classico 2001 – Tenuta Fontodi – Alc. 13.5% was just about as good as entry level Chianti Classico gets. It showed fragrant aromas, medium/full body, tangy acidity with a delicious hint of varnish, lively red fruit, wet leather touches and firm tannic structure singing harmoniously. Supremely moreish so that I had to pinch myself to avoid going down to bring up another bottle; 17/20.

Thanks Tim. I think I have one bottle of this. Will open soon. Hope the 04 and 06 turn out as well.

Fontodi has disappeared around here. I can get Felsina (love it), but it would be nice to have both.

Over the years I've had much better luck with Fontodi than Felsina...

Fontodi's importer here is very greedy so I buy Fèlsina instead. He asks €23 for the current vintage of this wine when the equivalent from Fèlsina can be had for €15 and Rancia is still just under €30.

The last twice I have passed through Tuscany, I made straight for the Fontodi estate.

The reverse is true for me, but I really like them both.

The 2004 Fontodi rocked my world, but it is definitely big and brawny.

Fontodi's have gotten mor expensively recently around these parts (Boston) as well but what is really insane are the larger formats. They are not just double or triple the price but much higher. That would be the importer at work I'm guessing.
