WTN: Trio of '08 Germans

2008 Johann Geil Bechtheimer Heilig-Kreuz Scheurebe Kabinett (Rheinhessen)
Screaming value at $13 from CSW and worth the price for the aromatics alone which are classic Scheurebe wildness - lavender, sage, orange and citrus fruits with floral touches. Doesn't show the same depth in the mouth, but it's certainly very tasty and refreshing with bright mandarin orange and tarter grapefruit flavours, light on its feet with bright acids though finishing a little short.

2008 Müller-Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Spätlese (Pfalz)
Fantastic stuff with a really compelling aromatic profile combining sage and pungent floral elements with green mango and grapefruit; really intense and rich in the mouth with the acidity giving the fruit/herbal flavours an incredible sense of freshness and energy despite the sweetness, delicious stuff that's all to easy to drink.

2008 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Spätlese (Mosel)
Striking. This brings to mind a JJ Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr, starting with a blast of sulfur that quickly gives away to gorgeous flavours of fresh Mosel fruit, nuanced floral and slatey elements on a very delicate, polished frame that's kept very fresh and lively by its acidity. Perhaps a touch light on the back end, but this is really delicious and a wine I definitely must buy more of.

So you've been be-geil-ed. I was waiting for the other Scheu to drop.

I would be very interested in trying what Franzen is doing with Catoir Scheurebe these days.

As for Lieser - I own several bottlings but never open them for the same reason I almost never open Prum - I keep waiting for the leesy/sulfur aromatics to clear up.

Well done. :D

We'll open a Franzen Scheu some time soon (once I get my hands on them), I managed to score a bit via Winebid. I don't find the sulfur in Lieser's wines anywhere near as bad as Prum - this one needed about 5-10 minutes in the glass to clear up, and after that was really impressive.
