WTN: Chanson Pere & Fils Vire-Clesse 2007

by Bruce Hayes » Mon Apr 12, 2010 8:45 pm

Burgundy

Bright gold, with green tints, in the glass.

Some sulphur on the nose, along with honey, oak and toast.

Medium weight, honeyed, drying lemon, apple, a hint of tangerine, spicy, good acidity, lots of oak, vibrant, rich, clean and refreshing.

Mouthwatering, lemon rind on the finish.

A very enjoyable bottle of wine.

Purchased at $19.95 (Canadian)

My experience as well! I really liked this in a blind tasting of white Burgs. But then again I am partial to white Burgundies, particularly from the Macon (unless someone else is buying). I have found some nice affordable wines from Chablis as well (tonight we had '08 Fevre Champs Royaux. Had a knockout red '05 Chanson (Beaune-Greves, 1st Cru) recently, and as someone noted earlier, this domaine seems to be on the up-swing.

Encouraged by these comments and contravening the law that states that 98% of what's for sale in duty-free shops is mediocre or worse I picked up a bottle of 2007 Chanson Père & Fils Beaujolais-Villages at my local when flying in two days ago. It certainly delivered the aromatic goods, with bright and classic strawberry, but after that came cloyingly candied fruit, that tasted like a heavy hand with the sugar bag, followed by an unattractively sour ending. Only bright spot was the palatable acidity. If Chanson is on an upswing, the news hasn't reached the Bojo department.
"I went on a rigorous diet that eliminated alcohol, fat and sugar. In two weeks, I lost 14 days." Tim Maia, Brazilian singer-songwriter.
