Will these wines bee too old????

by Gary Bobier » Sat Apr 10, 2010 3:47 pm

Ciao Tutti,

I am a bit concerned about the vintages on some of the white wines for my tasting. My wine guy says they will be great but I wnat a second opinion.
I think that the largeest issues are with the 2005 California Viognier and the 2007 Gruner Veltliner. The California Viognier is not that high in acid to begin with and I am concerned that it will be too flabby. It did not go thruogh the malo. On the 2007 Gruner Veltliner the wine is all about striking acid, pepper and peaches. Will the acid be too far gone after 3 years?

Hiedler “Thal” Gruner Veltliner 2007
Kunin Stolpman Stolpman Vineyard Viognier 2005
Guigal Condrieu 2006
Chateau Margaux Pavilion Blanc 2005

Thnk you in advance for all your help. I am on the home streach on this tasting and I want all to be out standing.

I had the 2005 Guigal Condrieu recently and while very interesting (I actually liked it a lot) it ain't very much like what one expected from viognier.

I wouldn't worry about the acid being too far gone on the GV.

The GV is fine, but don't wait with it for too long. Its really time to open the bottle now to enjoy it to the fullest

I haven't had any of these, but that won't stop me from offering opinions!

Well, at least on the 2 I've had in other vintages

The Hiedler Thal is usually pretty solid, and I can't imagine an 07 being past it- I mean 08 is current release.

I've never seen the value in Pavillon Blanc du Margaux - a good wine but priced as a great wine imho. That said I've drunk several at 8-12 years, never felt that age was the issue.

Nothing you've listed should be over the hill if the storage has been good. Emphasis on good.
