WTN: 2 German Rieslings (Pfalz and Nahe)

by Dale Williams » Fri Apr 09, 2010 9:42 am

My turn to do the cooking, and I made do with what we had in fridge. Smoked pork chops were braised with napa cabbage and Riesling, plus we had some snow peas, salad, and leftover potatoes.

The 2008 Eugen Muller "Z" Forster Ungeheuer Spatlese Trocken seemed a little tight/austere, but blossomed with air. Lots of body, just the slightest hint of sweetness, lime and apple fruit accented with cinnamon , flowers, and "wet rocks." Excellent length. I don't drink a lot of trocken, but quite enjoy this. A good steer from John Dawson at Zachys. B+/A-

What more is there to say re the 2007 Donnhoff Riesling QbA? Lovely balance, light sweetness, delicious if not profound. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Really liked the Muller "Z" as well Dale, opened a bottle (also from Zachys) a few weeks ago and had much the same impression.

Your note on the Dönnhoff QBA sums that up pretty well!

Dry wines just roll my toe nails up.

Last time i had one of these I first thougth about adding some cane sugar, had one more nip and then scooped it in the toilet. Wines like that make me drink Coca-Cola.

2007 Donnhoff Riesling QbA shure makes a good base for Weinschorle.
