WTN: New World Syrah with duck

by Dale Williams » Thu Apr 08, 2010 9:12 am

Tuesday Betsy made duck that had been marinating in a honey/5 spice combo, with mustard greens, grilled king oyster mushrooms, and brown rice with furikake. I'm usually a PN with duck guy, but I felt the sauce might be a bit much for Burgundy. So I went New World, with the 2000 Neyers Syrah (Napa). Big ripe dark berry fruit, moderate tannins, pretty good acids for a Napa Syrah. There's a hint of candied sweetness that detracts a bit for me, though Dave in particular likes this wine. I don't think further cellaring would be rewarded. It's not my style, but I have to say it did remarkably well as a match. Match gets an A-, the wine a B.

Wednesday we had whole grilled red snapper, which called out for Sancerre, but unfortunately I was driving group of students to the city, so abstained.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
