2005 Scholium Project Babylon Tenbrink Vineyards Suisun Valley 15.7%
My first Scholium red. Pitch red. A laudry list of aromas, some bulging, some fleeting, parade under the nacelles: coffee, cocoa, molasses, marzipan, epoxy... Martial mouth feel, brawny fruit matched by powerful acidity, unexpectedly well met. Truck driver testosterone meets quiche eater brain. Wears its bruiser alcohol with grace (I would have guessed 14%, max). I'm hardly into overripe fruit, but this is accomplished, a paean to ripeness. But, alas, beyond the curiosity of discovery and the interest in supporting a maverick enterprise, it gave me little pleasure.

Three bottles into my personal experiments with Scholium, and I am glad I only have a few left. I was interested (as apparently you were) in what the wines were all about, but after what I have tasted so far (Naucratis, the subject wine & a Gemella) there is little to no interest left.

It's sad, really. Steve will be the only one left standing, perhaps because he's grafted onto European rootstock...

ESJ has a European sensibility...

I liked this more than you did, surprisingly enough. But...it is $80 so I won't be buying much. :?

Brian, I got three at 29.99 each plus tax in NY, where two of the bottles remain. If you have friends in downtown Manhattan, I could leave them there for you...

My bottles of this wine (yes, I bought 2 :( ) were $39.99. More than in NYC, but still far from $80.

Wow. I guess they have new vintages they need to move.

I'll pass, though. I need to drink down my cellar and I am strapped for the foreseeable future. Nice price, though

Oswaldo,
though I do search for pleasure, I wouldn't mind one to try (had a SP white, no reds). We can talk trade next time we are going to see one another
